Discovery is a pre-trial phase in a lawsuit where both parties exchange information and gather evidence to build their respective cases. It involves several tools and procedures that allow each side to understand the facts of the case and prepare for trial.

Key Components of Discovery
1. Interrogatories
What it is: Interrogatories are written questions that one party sends to the other party. The recipient must respond to these questions in writing, under oath.
Purpose: Interrogatories help clarify the facts of the case, gather details about the other party's claims or defenses, and identify potential evidence or witnesses. It’s like a written interview where each side asks the other for specific information.
2. Production of Documents
What it is: These are formal requests for the other party to provide documents relevant to the case.
Purpose: To obtain evidence such as medical records, accident reports, emails, or other documents that can support the claims or defenses.
3. Requests for Admissions
What it is: These are statements sent to the other party, who must admit or deny the truth of each statement.
Purpose: To simplify the trial by establishing certain facts as true, thus reducing the number of issues to be proven in court.
4. Depositions
What it is: Depositions involve oral questioning of parties or witnesses under oath, usually conducted in a lawyer’s office with a court reporter present to record the testimony.
Purpose: To gather detailed, firsthand accounts of the events and obtain statements that can be used at trial.
